home furnished by craigslist

I don't have much for you tonight - it's been a day of bumps and bruises and frustrations all around. Tile floors and wobbly cruising babies do. not. mix. That's all I'm saying. 

Since there has to be a picture, I thought I'd show you my find of last week on my local craigslist. 

It was free from a sweet lady out in Sun City who wanted it to have a good home. I guess I have the good home vibe. It has dancers and a bird and plays Eidelweiss. What could be better?

I envy all of my peeps who have great thrift store successes. I don't have the time or energy to hunt things out in thrift stores and yard sales with a 7 month old baby (and let's be honest - I never have the patience) but I can certainly cruise craigslist while nursing. I'm picky about what I bring home but when I find something great, I move fast. I love furnishing my home with old things that just need love and a good home. A home full of found treasures with stories to tell is a happy home indeed. 

I guess this means I'm a collector

Last night while I was cruising the antique section of craigslist, like everyone does at 11PM on Wednesday night, a listing jumped out at me. I clicked over to it and saw a beautiful old sewing machine that a young man was selling for a song. I emailed him and he emailed back and said "which one? I have two." So I scurried back to craigslist and gasped. I met him today and came home with this. 

Meet Verna. She's a Singer 500A, also known as "The Rocketeer". She belonged to the nice young man's grandma, and he thought she needed a home where she would be appreciated. Let me tell you, that home is mine. 

I don't remember if I ever posted the gorgeous machine that my friend Sallyn gave me last summer, but now would be a good time to share her too. And really - there's no friend like the friend who gives you an awesome vintage sewing machine that's just sitting in her basement. 

Stella is a Singer 306K from about the same era. She is a workhorse of a machine - nothing will stop her. I love that about her.

I think they'll be very good friends. I also think I need to clean my dining room table. 

 

p.s. The first machine came home with me too because she also needed a good home. However, I think she needs to go to another loving home, since I really don't need three vintage Singers in addition to my trusty Berninagarcia. Email me if you're in the market for a clean vintage Singer and I'll send you the details and photos. Same era - the model number is a 301A and she comes with many accessories. If I don't find a buyer, she'll probably end up being Annika's Christmas gift. Either way, I just want her to be loved.

My halfhearted thrifting this weekend was remarkable unsuccessful with one exception. For $2.99, I came home with a pristine copy of this.

I have spent the afternoon curled up on the couch with visions of homemade croissants, artisanal breads, lefse (I even have the pan! Thanks Mom!), Danish braids, brioche. Yum. The beauty of making breads is tthat I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I turn flour, water, yeast, salt, maybe an egg or two, maybe some sugar, into something so nourishing for our bodies and souls. The alchemy of yeast never ceases to amaze me. I bring the bread out of the oven and the kids gather around, wanting some right now.  And right now sounds just right to me. Off to bake some bread.
